So, you want to start a blog, but have no idea where to start? You have something to say, but not sure how to get it out there for readers to find? No fear! I’m here to help. Starting a blog is not nearly as difficult as it may seem. In fact, it’s fairly simple. Go ahead and grab a pen and paper and I will show you how to start a blog in five easy steps.
How to Start a Blog in Five Easy Steps
Most soon-to-be-bloggers start off with a desire to blog because they have something to say and they want to share it with the world. This message could be related to a passion in life, a hobby, a business, a desire to help/educate/motivate others, budgeting/personal finance, travel, fashion, food, healthy living, or simply talking about every day life. The list of topics that bloggers blog about is endless. And the good news is that regardless of your chosen niche, there’s an audience out there waiting to hear what you have to say!
Okay. You know what you want to blog about, but now what? Let’s go through the five steps that will get your blog up and running today! Yes, you could actually have a blog published TODAY!
Step #1 – Choose a Topic
What are you going to write about? If you are wanting to be a blogger, chances are you have already decided on your topic/niche. My advice is to choose a topic that you are truly passionate about. A topic you could talk about forever, and ever, and ever…without ever getting tired of it. Sometimes, this is what blogging will feel like. You want to make sure your topic is one that you will not tire of any time soon. You don’t have to be an expert on the subject, but maybe something you are curious enough to learn about as you blog. Maybe a journey that you are beginning or are currently on. You could write about a variety of things, and that’s okay too.
Will you be blogging for business or as a creative outlet? Is this a passion project, or an educational forum? Will your approach be informative or inspirational? You can blog about anything these days. If you don’t have one specific topic or niche, that’s okay too. Many bloggers incorporate multiple subjects into one blog. What will you blog about?
Step #2 – Choose a Web Host Provider/Domain Name
There are a number of web hosting options available, but I strongly recommend going with Bluehost. Bluehost is fast, simple, reliable, and affordable. Choosing your package and setting up your account is super easy and can be done in just a few steps.
1 – Click HERE to choose your package
2 – Select your plan based on your hosting needs (Basic, Plus, or Prime)
3 – Select your FREE domain name, or enter your existing name if you have one – you can also choose a domain name at a later time if you are still deciding
A domain name is the title of your website, or the name of your blog. You want to make it relatable to your niche, but don’t be afraid to think outside of the box too. Think about the topic(s) that you intend to write about and the audience you hope to reach. Maybe a word, or series of words, that describe you and your blog. If you wanted someone to find you via Google search, what keywords would they be searching for? Make a list of potential names and be prepared to adjust if the .com or .net is not available. Play around with the name a little. You will find the right one.
Did I mention that Bluehost gives you a FREE domain name with any hosting package through my links? Yep, they sure do! Click HERE or any of the Bluehost pics to select your hosting package and get started today!
Also, if you hang out on this screen for a minute, a surprise might pop up on your screen! 🙂
4 – Create your account, select your hosting package (36/60 months for best price)
5 – Check out and you are official! Well, almost official. Installing WordPress is next…
Yay! You took the first step in becoming an official blogger! Now you get to work on designing the look of your site with WordPress. #cheerstoyou

#3 – Install WordPress and Choose a Theme
WordPress is the #1 blogging platform in the world. There are other options, but none as widely utilized as WordPress. With Bluehost as your web hosting provider, you can install WordPress with the click of one button. Yes, you read that correct. You don’t have to be a tech genius to get your blog up and running. With Bluehost you will simply click one button to install WordPress on your computer, and viola! You are ready to design your site!
Spending money on web hosting is necessary (there are free options, but you will not be able to monetize [make money] with your blog with a free option, and that’s usually one of the top goals for bloggers – we will cover this in more detail in a subsequent post). Spending money on a WordPress theme, however, is optional. There are SEVERAL free themes to choose from. Nice themes, too. The quickest way to get your blog up and running is to choose a free theme, as you can always change your theme at a later date. Whichever theme you choose, make sure it’s fully responsive (meaning easily viewed on all devices [pc, laptop, tablet, mobile]), and select a theme that best represents your blog topic, message, and you!
Step #4 – Set Up Your Social Media Accounts
One of the most effective ways to promote your blog is via social media. This is a critical step to establishing and growing your audience. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat, and Google+ are just a few of the options. You absolutely do not have to set up accounts on every platform. Keeping up with social media can be a full time job, so do what works best for you. Try to use account names that are identical to your blog/domain name when possible. The more consistent your brand name is across all platforms, the easier it will be for readers to find you.
Setting up your social media accounts could be step #5, but I think you should set them up sooner, rather than later. You can wait until you are ready to promote your blog/share your blog posts via social, but get the accounts set up right away.
Step #5 – Write and Publish Your First Blog Post!
Pick you first topic. Write a post. Publish it. And there you go. You are officially a blogger! Okay, maybe not so fast. You are going to want to spend some time writing good, quality content. Make sure your post reads easy, is aesthetically pleasing (use quality images – your own or free stock photos), and delivers on your message to your audience. What audience, you might ask? No worries. We will talk about marketing your blog and finding your readers in the next post. For now, get as many blog posts written as you can. Have your friends, family, or anyone willing to take a look give you honest feedback. Tweak where necessary. Move on to the next post!
